SMART HOME ESSENTIALS

LETS START FROM THE BEGINNING

Adapting an existing home to become more user friendly or “Smart” starts with the first step, Your internet connection. You need a decent internet connection to make not only all of your systems function but also general web browsing and streaming and all those other things you do online.  After that you’ll need either a structured cabling system to all of your devices, or a good WIFI system.  Most common is a good WIFI system.  If you have a small house, a decent base station may be good enough. If you have a larger house or an older home with plaster, a mesh system would be best. Plaster is basically concrete and WIFI as well as Bluetooth have trouble getting signals through walls. Also to note: most companies wont tell you in the setup pages but heres a secret. WIFI functions like an umbrella.

So, the higher it is the better coverage you get. I personally use a mesh system. My personal recommendation is EERO. Very easy to set up and easy to use. It offers great security features and complete control of users and devices.  It’s very expandable and affordable. Your ISP (internet service provider) will generally include a wireless router with your startup kit. This is a good way to get started if you’re on a budget. Keep in mind, if you start having connectivity issues or slow on no response times you’ll want to consider an upgrade. Start with these two things and you’ll soon be on your way. From here we can start adding all those devices that suit your needs. See below for a list of general “Smart” devices and ideas in our “17 Must Have Smart Home Devices” link to get started. Not all are one size fits all but it should help to outline your choices.
